Kalendar
for the
diocese of Turku
(imperfect, January and May are missing). Includes the dedication feast for
Turku
cathedral (17 June) and translation feast of St
Henry
(18 June); also
Erasmus
(3 June) and
Praxedis
(21 July), which suggest the calendar stems from
saec. XVI
. The calendar also features the feast of
Linus
(26 November) only found in a few Finnish medieval kalendars. Written in a hand of
saec. XVI
.

Quire signatures (D–M) in the lower margin of the first and last leaves of each quire. Occasional catchwords in the lower margin on the final verso of a quire.
The manuscript is defective at the beginning (three quires missing); folia missing after fols. 9, 31, 43, 61, 66, 84, 98, 119. Fol. 118’s counter-leaf is the back pastedown. Between them, two quires have been placed. A singleton containing the month of May must be missing between fols. 122 and 123 of the calendar.
There are several watermarks. The one in the main portion features a
crown without arch and without additional motif
(
Piccard, Kronen, I, 301–340
); a
circle with a cross above it
(
Briquet, 3034–(40)
); two marks of a
bull with eyes and nostrils and with a star above it
(
Piccard, Ochsenkopf, VII
); a
bull with eyes and nose and with a star above it
(
Piccard, Ochsenkopf, IX, esp. 315
;
Briquet, esp. 14193
; dated
1466-1474
). The kalendar portion has one watermark, a
letter P with a four-leafed flower above it and fleur-de-lis on the side
(see esp.
Piccard online, no. 114734
, dated to
1499
); see also
Åström 2013, 147
.
The manuscript is in decent condition. There are several folia missing; there is a considerable amount dirt on the folia; some leaves have holes or have been torn; there is fraying along the edges; and in places the text has become smudged.
One column with occasionally visible vertical bounding lines; 21–22 lines of text.
One cursive main hand writing the
Landslag
,
Gårdsrätt
and
Kyrkobalk
. He identifies himself as
Andreas Nicolai Poyz
(?) and dates the work to
1468
on fol.
97v
.
From fol. 120 various later hands making additions. Later hands have also added notes in the margins against the law texts.
Simple red lombard initials with flourishing in green (usually three-lines high, four at the beginning of chapters). Headings in the upper margin and article numbers in the outer margin in red until fol.
46r
. After this both have been added by later hands. Highlighting and article breaks marked in red. There is occasional elongation of the letters on the first and last rows and occasional decoration in the lower margins.
Worn, dark brown calf over wooden boards. The boards on both covers have split vertically down the middle and are held together by the leather of the covers and the parchment pastedowns. One hook-clasp with the catch on the edge of the front cover. The clasp is attached to a piece of leather and shows a few simple incised decorations.
Front and back pastedowns are leaves from a
missal
of
saec. XV
. On the back cover, another torn piece of parchment with a charter containing a judgment given by Judge
Klas Fleming
(
REA 337
) has been pasted on top of the missal fragment.
The manuscript contains a copy of
Magnus Eriksson
’s
Landslag
written in
1468
in a rapid but legible cursive by a scribe who identifies himself as
Andreas Nicolai
. The small size and modest appearance suggest it may have been intended for personal use.
The manuscript may have been written originally in
Finland
, but it was certainly there in
1512
when it was purchased by
Påval Hermansson
, presumably a local judge, for use in
Sääksmäki
. The Finnish kalendar found at the end of the volume was probably added during this time.
The manuscript was purchased for
Sääksmäki
parish in
1512
. ‘Liber iste est possidendus territorium Sex æmeky emptus pro xx marker per virum spectabilem paulum hermandzson Anno domini mdxij
o
jn crastino(?) petri et pale(!)’ ‘Si quis alienauerit hunc librum a territorio prefato alienauerit ipse a regno dei’ (fol.
130v
).
Påval Hermansson
is probably identical with the judge appearing in
Sääksmäki
1516
(see
FMU 5882
).
Fol.
119v
contains an unidentified coat of arms:
Argent (uncoloured), a tree eradicated sprouting out two branches with a single leaf proper bordure vert embattled chief vert and argent
. Crest:
On a helmet with mantling argent and vert two arms bowed counter embowed vambraced argent holding pine branches proper
.
Later on the manuscript came into the collections of the minister and book collector,
Otto Thott
(1703–1785). Upon his death, the manuscripts in his collection were received by the
Royal Library in Copenhagen
by bequest. Shelf-mark ‘2100 Thottske Saml.’ on inner front cover. The Royal Library’s stamp on the inside front cover and inside back cover.
