                <condition> The manuscript is in fairly good shape, with some staining to the
                  leaves. Leaves towards the end and beginning of the book have understandably
                  sustained some more wear; they have been extensively restored (esp. fols.
                  142–143). <bibl>Pirinen (1962, 93)</bibl> dated the manuscript in the second half
                  of the 1540’s based on his identification of the watermark found on
                  fols. [A] and 1–132 with <bibl>Briquet’s no. 10972</bibl>. Maria Kallio has recently
                    re-examined the watermarks and concluded that they cannot in fact be identified
                    any catalogued watermarks (2012, 17–18; on the structure of the codex also at
                    15–16).</condition>

                <p>Several (5–8?) hands writing varieties of Gothic Cursive and Hybrida. Textualis
                  (with parts in Hybrida) used for (most) rubrics in the <title>manual</title> and <title>missal</title> (see
                  fols. <locus>35r</locus>, <locus>40r</locus>, <locus>43v</locus>, <locus>54r</locus>, <locus>57r</locus>, <locus>65v</locus>, <locus>77v</locus>, cf. <locus>73r</locus>), which appears to
                be the work of one scribe, possibly <persName role="scribe">Mathias Westh</persName>
                himself. Kallio suggests that the same hand writes on fols. 134–136, 141,
                143, and with a couple of other hands on fols. <locus>101r</locus>–<locus>128r</locus>
                  (cf. <bibl>Kallio 2012, 18–26</bibl>). Judging by the script, fols. <locus>90v</locus>–<locus>99v</locus>,
                  <locus>129v</locus>–<locus>132r</locus> may have been copied somewhat later than the manual-missal; the
                  notation on five lines on fols. <locus>129v</locus>–<locus>130v</locus> may also suggest this (see
                  <bibl>Tuppurainen 2012, 89</bibl>).</p>

              <p>Monochromatic pen-drawn lombards or gothic versals of varying quality used for the
                initials of chants, rubrics distinguished by script if at all. The only use of
                colour is found on fol. <locus>33v</locus>, where a part of the baptismal formula has been copied
                in badly faded red ink. </p>

            <bindingDesc>
             <p>A <date type="binding" from="1800" to="1899">nineteenth-century</date> quarter leather binding of
                cardboard. The front cover has the University Library’s stamp in gold, with the
                legend ‘Otium sapientiae, 1761’ (the year is not related to the date of the
                binding). The covers are worn and detached from the binding; the legend in gold on
                the back of the cover, ‘Käsikirja 1546’, has been rendered illegible. The manuscript
                has been separated from the printed Manual and Mass of 1541 in the 19th century (see
                the notice on fol. [b]v). Fols. [a–c] have probably been added on this occasion.

          <history>
            <origin>A liturgical miscellany prepared perhaps for the personal use of <persName
                role="owner">Mathias Westh</persName>, probably to a large extent by himself. The
              manual-missal (fols. <locus>29r</locus>–<locus>91r</locus>) has clearly formed a self-contained unit,
              but its relation with the other parts of the codex is harder to judge. Some of the
              other hands may be somewhat later, but it seems that <persName role="author">Urbanus
                Rhegius</persName>’s text has been copied by the main scribe of the manual-missal in
              collaboration with one or two other scribes. Kallio suggests that <persName
                role="owner">Westh</persName> had some of his students assist him in copying
                (<bibl>Kallio 2012, 27</bibl>). Some time after Westh’s death in <date type="acquisition">1549</date>
              the book found its way from <placeName type="origin">Rauma</placeName> to the nearby
                <placeName type="provenance">Vehmaa</placeName> church, where it was preserved but
              apparently little used, until it was taken, probably in the nineteenth century, to
              <placeName>Helsinki</placeName> and what is now the <orgName>National Library of Finland</orgName>. </origin>
            <provenance>
              <p>The title page of the manual-missal (fol. <locus>29r</locus>) has the initials M(M)W and the date
                <date>1546</date>. The list of debts on fol. <locus>143r</locus> contains the date <date>[15]47</date>. The
                ownership markings on fol. <locus>143v</locus> (both struck over: ‘Mathiae Joannis westh Codex’ and
                ‘Mathie Johannis Codex’) probably identify the man behind the initials on fol. <locus>29r</locus>:
                the chaplain and schoolmaster of Rauma, <persName role="owner">Mathias
                  Westh</persName> (d. <date>1549</date>). The persons named in the list of debts on
                fol. <locus>143v</locus> lived in the area of Rauma (see <bibl>Kallio 2012, 12</bibl>). The
                manuscript has previously been bound together with a copy of the <title>Swedish Manual and
                  Mass</title> of 1541, which has also belonged to <persName>Mathias Westh</persName> (initials MW on the first
                folio). 
                In addition, the printed book carries the ownership mark of <placeName
                  type="provenance">Vehmaa church</placeName>. It (and thus the present manuscript
                which accompanied it) is found in the surviving <date from="1600" to="1699"
                  >seventeenth-century</date> inventories of Vehmaa church, but not in the
                nineteenth-century list, maintained between <date from="1837" to="1875">1837 and
                  1875</date>.</p></provenance>
            <acquisition>
                <p>The manuscript has been rebound for what is now the <orgName>National Library
                  of Finland</orgName>
                <date from="1829" to="1866">between 1829 and 1866</date>. It may have been brought
                  to the library by students gathering antiquities for the <orgName>Finnish Literature Society</orgName>
                  (<bibl>Kallio 2012, 13</bibl>). Inside the front cover, on fol. <locus>[a]r</locus>, fol.
                    <locus>[c]v</locus>, and inside the back cover there are (three different) blue stamps of
                the University Library (Manuscript department). The shelfmark, ‘C.III.19’, has been
                written in pencil on <locus>fol. [c]v</locus> and <locus>inside the back cover.</locus></p></acquisition>
