The cartulary contains 268 copies of charters, privileges and documents for the dean and chapter or bishop of Turku cathedral. The documents date from the 13th to 15th centuries (with additions from the 16th century). Most of them are edited in Registrum Ecclesiae Aboensis (REA).

I:

Fols. 1r–39v: Documents concerning tithe taxes; papal and royal privileges. Several leaves are missing from this unit and due to that some of the documents are imperfect.

Fols. 106r, 108v, 112r–116r, 121v, 124v: Letter and sermon drafts, and verse (in Latin and Swedish) written in the empty margins and occasionally over the original text. Partly by Arvidus Nicolai, partly by another scribe (saec. XVI).

The cartulary is in places in poor condition. It has suffered water damage while several leaves, including two entire quires (after the present quire VIII), have been cut out or ripped off.

Littera Gothica Cursiva, several scribes. 16th century additions in last two quires are, at least partly, written in a humanistic script by Canon Arvidus Nicolai Särkilahti, who writes his name, for example, on fol. 124v. Other additions were written at the castle of Turku by an unknown scribe.

Inhabited initials on fols. 106v, 116v and 125v. Stylized initials are used to mark the beginning of each charter throughout the manuscript, especially in the last two quires.

Original limp binding of dark brown leather, partially damaged. A printed copy of Pope Sixtus IV's recommendation for the papal legate Bartholomaeus de Camerino (14 October 1483) is attached as the front flyleaf.

Skokloster Codex Aboensis is one of two medieval cartularies that have survived from Turku cathedral and chapter. Most of the documents have been copied from the cathedral's other cartulary, Stockholm, National Archives, A 10 (‘Registrum ecclesie Aboensis’). The watermarks suggest that the cartulary was copied around the 1480s or 1490s. In the 1540s, Canon Arvidus Nicolai Särkilahti used the cartulary as a personal notebook, drafting some letters and sermons in it. Some of these additions are written over the unerased original texts.

From Turku cathedral the cartulary came to Turku castle in the mid-16th century at the time of the reformation.

Jaakkola (1952, XXIII) has argued that the manuscript was discovered there by the Governor-General, Per Brahe, in the 17th century. After Per Brahe´s death in 1680 the cartulary became part of the collections of Skokloster Castle in Sweden, with the shelf-mark N. 70 (seen on the spine and front flyleaf recto). In 1892 the manuscript was transferred to the present-day Swedish National Archives.
