              <p>The contents agree with the Dominican use
                followed in the medieval <origPlace>Diocese of Turku</origPlace>, with some
                reformatory changes to the text (see e.g. <locus>fol. 4v</locus>
                ‘O dator’ and <locus>fol. 5r</locus> ‘Nate Dei nos visita’ for
                originally Marian invocations; see also the biblical source indications in the
                margins). The sanctoral is fragmentary and possibly selective. The manuscript seems
                to be missing an office for St <persName role="saint">Henry</persName>, unless the
                office without rubric on fols. <locus>120r</locus>-<locus>121r</locus> is it and not Commune
                plurimorum martyrum. This is suggested by the require-note on fol. <locus>133r</locus>, which
                indicate that the antiphons Isti sunt sancti and Lauerunt are to be found in the
                office of St <persName role="saint">Henry</persName>. Both antiphons are to be found
                in the untitled office on fols. <locus>120r</locus>-<locus>121r</locus>.</p>

                  1929, 256</bibl>) and in an other hand, with the rubric <hi rend="italic">Marian

                <lang>Finnish</lang> in hands of <date type="addition" from="1500" to="1699">saec. XVI–XVII</date>, without

                version of the hymn found on <locus>fol. [B]v</locus> in <lang>Finnish</lang>; see <bibl>Kurvinen

                    leaves after fols. 9, 37, 50, 55, 101, 102, and 127; possibly also after
                    62?</catchwords>
                </collation>
                <condition> The manuscript has been heavily restored, with torn or cut leaves
                  repaired with paper and all leaves rather ill-advisedly mounted on fibrous plastic
                  sheets [= laminated?], with the result that they all curve heavily inwards. This
                  includes the original pastedowns, which have been mounted in the front and back of
                  the book, as fols. [B] and [D]. Fol. [C]. The restoration appears to extend to the
                  quire structure (the current 7th quire, fols. 46–55, is missing a leaf between
                  fols. 50 and 51, but appears to have six leaves before its centre, between fols.
                  51 and 52, and is unlikely to have originally been larger than a senion), but as
                  the binding has not been opened the structure breakdown presented here must remain
                  tentative. </condition>

                when present distinguished by script if at all. The initial on <locus>fol. 51v</locus> has been signed '<persName type="scribe">Marcus
                  Andreae</persName>', in a hand may be one of the many scribes of the book.</p>

              <p>Modern full leather binding in light calfskin on
                boards (20 × 33), with raised bands.</p>
              <condition>The front and back cover of what was probably the original binding of the
                book have been pasted on the present covers (and the covering of the spine is
                fastened inside the back cover). These are of darker brown leather and badly
                worn</condition>
              <decoNote>blind-tooled concentric frames and barely discernible stamped
                decoration.</decoNote>
              <p>The original book was closed with clasps, the fastenings of which have left their
                mark on the covers.</p>

            <origin>A somewhat fragmentary copy of a catholic antiphonary, prepared by several
              scribes, possibly during a longer period of time, in <origDate from="1550" to="1599">Saec. XVI<hi rend="superscript">2</hi></origDate>.</origin>
            <provenance>
              <p>Owned and probably used by several priests in the <date from="1500" to="1699">sixteenth and seventeenth
                centuries</date>: cf. notes <locus>Fol. [B]r</locus> (apparently former front
                pastedown): ‘Petrois[?] Jacobij in birik[?]’
                <locus>Fol. [B]v</locus>: ‘H[u]nc librum
                  prudentissimus, honestissimus, vir[t]utisque [..]dique ar*tissime plenus vir
                  Ericus Sigfridi Nato suo unico nec non charissimo, bonae indolis optimaque spei
                  puellulo ornata de stirpe Jacobo Erici, in tesseram et signum perpetuo durantis
                  caritatis, emit duabus bis marcis. Anno 1602, die 20 Novembris’. These
                persons are probably <persName role="owner">Ericus Sigfridi</persName>, chaplain at
                <placeName type="provenance">Somero</placeName> <date type="provenance" from="1611" to="1628">1611-1628</date>(?) and <persName role="owner"
                  >Jacobus Erici</persName>, chaplain <date>1586</date> and curate <date from="1590"
                  to="1603">1590-1603</date> in <placeName type="provenance">Kaarina</placeName> (see <bibl>Strandberg
                  1832, vol. 1, 74-75</bibl>; <bibl>Leinberg 1903,
                    200</bibl>). On the same folio also ‘Librum poseβior est Henricus Simonis Rymmatylensis Emtus ese liber pro duas
                  daleros’; see also <locus>fol. [D]r</locus>, <quote>‘Henricus
                  Simonis’</quote>. This is <persName role="owner">Henricus Simonsson</persName>,
                chaplain at <placeName type="provenance">Rymättylä</placeName> in <date from="1634" to="1638"
                  >1634–1638</date> (<bibl>Leinberg 1903, 182</bibl>). The
                incised versals 'HSR' on the back cover are probably also his
                ownership mark. On <locus>fol. [B]v</locus> also in a hand of <date type="addition" from="1600" to="1699">saec. XVII</date>:
                  ‘Possidet Petrus Georgi’. <bibl>Schalin (1946,
                    43)</bibl> observes that the same person calls himself
                  ‘Petrus Jörensson Kiskoensis’, but this mark has evaded my notice.
                If this alias is correct, he is probably <persName role="owner">Petter
                  Lagus</persName> (d. ca. 1710), student in
                  <placeName>Turku</placeName> in <date>1692/3</date>, assistant to the curate of
                  <placeName>Finström</placeName> in <date>1700</date>, regiment preacher in the
                Turku Province regiment of foot soldiers from <date>1702</date> and parson from
                  <date>1705</date> (<bibl>Kotivuori 2005</bibl>, s.v. Petter Lagus). .</p>

            <acquisition><p>The book found its way finally to <placeName type="prov"
                  >Tammela</placeName> church, from where it was removed and brought to
                  <placeName>Helsinki</placeName> and the <orgName>Finnish Antiquarian
                    Society</orgName> in <date type="acquisition">1882</date>; cf. In a hand of <date from="1800" to="1899">saec. XIX</date>:
              ‘Smy. 30.8.1882 Tammelan kirkosta’ In the <date type="acquisition" from="1920" to="1929">1920s</date> the Society gave
              the book to the <orgName>National Library of Finland</orgName>; on the back flyleaf <locus>(fol. [E]v)</locus>, an envelope holds a handwritten four pages long description
                of the book by <persName role="scholar">Toivo Haapanen</persName> in Finnish and a
                typescript of the same in Swedish translation.Inside the front cover <stamp>the blue
                  stamp of the manuscript department</stamp>; inside the back cover the shelfmark,
                ‘Cö I 9’ in pencil.. </p>
